Intended to fulfill this family's dream of having their own cabin in the Colorado Rockies, this log home incorporates many characteristics of one of the most endearing American housing icons: the "cabin in the woods". Perched on a mountainside adjacent to Beaver Creek ski resort, the building site offered dramatic views to the lower valley, long-range mountaintop vistas, and a glimpse of the ski village itself. In addition to outstanding views, bountiful sunshine is found in winter as well as summertime and the aspen covered hillside offers protection from winter storms and neighbors alike. Access to the home is provided on the uphill side of the property, and the impression of the home upon arrival is that it is much smaller than its 5,000 square foot size.
The main level floor plan is based on an informal, open layout between the three primary living spaces: great room, dining and kitchen. Placement of the great room was most important, in order to maximize long-range mountain views while taking advantage of sun exposure and access to a wrap-around wood deck. The unique design solution at the great room features a faceted form with angled walls flanking either side of the fireplace. These angled walls maximize views in two directions and bring lots of natural daylighting and sunshine into the home.
